For years I did not know how to describe to a barber I had never met before how to get a satisfactory haircut. I finally hit on a foolproof procedure.
Get a wooden pencil with a rubber eraser on one end. With a black felt tip marker make a line around the pencil 1.5 inches from the rubber end of the pencil. Give this to the barber. The barber can put the rubber eraser against your scalp if necessary to cut every hair 1.5 inches long. If some hair is already less than 1.5 inches, leave that hair alone.
Not perhaps ideal, but always acceptable.
When the pandemic hit, I did not dare go to a barber. So I cut my own hair. I use Klein electrical scissors from amazon.com. With one hand, grasp a bunch of hair and pull it away from the scalp. With two fingers of the other hand resting on the scalp, clasp the bunch of hair you have pulled up. With the first hand pick up the scissors and cut the hair off just above the fingers that are clasping the hair. Do this for all the hair on your head and you will have a very satisfactory haircut.
